Lameness that won't go away after 6 months

Hi, Does anyone have any suggestions to try after a horse has been on stall rest for a very deep abcess that has now healed, but he can't walk without limping very badly. We had to have some of the sole of his foot removed and then he had a shoe with a plate to provide for meds to be absorbed in the foot. I was told to let him out and get some exercise now, but he is in so much pain again he won't put his foot down. This horse is a halter gelding weighing about 1450 lbs. now that he has lost about 200 to help with his foot. Right now his owner is looking at the possibilty of losing him unless we can find some reason for the continued lameness. ANY suggestions will be greatly appreciated!! Thank You, RQH1

I was recently given a 7 year old paint mare that eight months ago had stepped on a piece of wire and it absessed, she had been a lesson horse but they could not use her any more. The vet said he could not promise that she would ever be 100% again but it takes about a year or so to really tell, that the hoof area takes a long time.I work her about every day a little and she keeps getting better, still just a little sore but so much better.
